We
had unbelievable weather for the start and finish of the 2010 season.
Temperatures in the 70’s and 80’s in both May and September made it
feel more like summer than either spring or fall.
Lots of rain kept lake levels high and fishing great.
This
summer we welcomed Jim MacFarlane and Bob Wall back to Echo. They were here in the early 70’s when Hank and Marcie Faess
owned camp. It is with great
sadness, but many good memories, that we note the passing of two of the former
owners of Echo Lake Lodge. Don
Barrigar, Sr. died May 27, 2010 and Jack Zazza died on June 29, 2010. Our condolences go out to all of their family and friends.
Several
guests saw a cow and calf moose that hung around camp.
One day in the fall, we were awakened by her mating call.
She was behind Caribou with her calf.
Some very large Woodland Caribou were photographed and can be viewed on
our website. Although the
mosquitoes were not too bad this summer, we did have to call in a ‘Swat
Team’ one night on the Party Deck. Due to the wet summer, the black flies were present all
season. Chris fished
with a hook protector on her new lure and Darryl caught his trophy Northern on a
‘bald’ Mepps #5. Jim Sanfort
fished ½ day with only 1 lens in his sunglasses… he said the day was only
partly sunny? Jim MacFarlane’s
group saw 23 Lady Slippers on the trail to Detour.
Lindsey Evans drew a detailed picture of the Main Lodge.
We have posted it on our website under Pictures 2010.
Fish
populations continue to increase. Our
thanks to everyone who practices catch and release.
Congratulations to Peter Anderson for the largest Northern
(43.5”) caught this season. Rob
Glodowski’s great week of fishing included catching the largest Walleye
(32”) and the largest Lake Trout (28”).
Other guests were successful in catching and releasing their personal
bests: 41” Northern by Darryl
Somers and Marc Foster. 36.5”
Northern by Don Sill and Elizabeth Ehr.
Large Walleye included: 30”
Walleye by Gary Pribyl, Bob Wall and Doug Eggers.
29” Walleye by Mark Ipsan, Jim Jones and 28” Walleye by Ben
Ostrowski. Many Lake Trout were
caught this year including: 27.25”
and 25.5” by Matt Pruss, 24.5” by Doug Eggers, Mark Ipsan, Brian
Spangler, and John Melum. 24”
Lake Trout by Curt Klinkner, Bob Wall, and David Ehr.
Also, congratulations to Peter Ostrowski, Matt Repinski, Jim Carey,
Matt Kolling and Dan Berdan on their successful black bear hunts.
Some big ones are still there because they are getting smarter.
Improvements
and upgrades to camp this year include: We
replaced the 4 boats on Detour with Lunds.
There are wider bunks with new mattresses at the Outpost Cabin on Detour.
High Lake and Lake of Bays now have Sea Nymph boats.
Caribou has a new double bed and bunk beds.
Thanks to the Fall Work Crew, getting into camp will be easier now that
approximately 1/3 of the 4-wheeler trail has been graveled and Cook Road was
graded. The beaver dam is gone and
the culvert opened so Cook Road is now dry.
As
a reminder to our returning guests, BRING YOUR OUTDOOR’S
CARD or you will be required to purchase another one.
As of June 1, 2009, U.S. citizens 16 years of age or over who
re-enter the United States are REQUIRED to have a passport.
A Canadian regulation starting September 15, 2009,
requires all boat operators to have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card or a
completed Rental Boat Safety Checklist (available from us).
Non-residents can use written proof of competency from their own country
such as a boating safety course. As
of July 1, 2010, Canada Revenue has combined the PST and GST taxes.
It is now a Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) of 13%. Propane and gas, as well as most of the items you purchase in
Canada, are now subjected to this new tax.
We
are now taking reservations for the 2011 season.
As always, our mailing list
guests have first priority to make reservations, so we encourage you to reserve
your trip to Echo Lake Lodge as soon as your group has finalized plans. We pride ourselves in being the most reasonably priced
lodge in the Red Lake area. Keep in
mind that our rates include boat, motor, unlimited gas and all government taxes.
Please check our brochure for current rates.
We require that you put 25% down within 2
weeks of making your reservation and send the balance by April 30, 2011.
See you soon at Echo Lake Lodge!
