Walleye: Unchallenged as table fare, walleye is the most popular and most angled fish in Northwestern Ontario. Sunset Country offers the best walleye fishing anywhere in North America. Vertical jigging (1/8 oz to 3/8 oz hot pink and chartreuse jigs are local favorites) are your best bet. Walleye also like a variety of minnow plugs and crank baits - the time of year and weather conditions generally dictate what presentation works the best. In general, sunrise and sunset are the best times of day to go after the walleye. Labeled a "walleye wonderland" by the Outdoor News' Northern Ontario Outdoor Guide, Sunset Country is the place to be for walleye anglers. The Ontario record is 22.25 pounds with the best eating size in the 1.5 to 3 pound range. Walleye define the Canadian shore lunch experience - something you won't want to miss.
Lake Trout: Lake trout inhabit the cold, dark depths of deep lakes in Sunset Country. In many instances, you will require downriggers to reach the depths they inhabit during the summer months. Early in the spring or late fall, lake trout can be found in shallower waters. Averaging between 2 and 12 pounds, these fish grow very slowly and live for an extremely long time. The bigger trout in the region can exceed 30 pounds. you can troll for lake trout to first locate tem and then switch to a vertical jigging technique using heavy jigs or large spoons to reel them in.
Northern Pike: Northern Pike are the most aggressive predatory fish that inhabit our waters. Averaging between 8 and 12 pounds, northern offe4r an exciting experience for any angler. The larger pike in Sunset Country can exceed 40 inches and weigh 30 pounds or more. Just about any presentation works on this fish. Spoons, spinners and crank baits all work well. While found just about anywhere, pikes tend to prefer protected bays with lots of weeds where, hidden in cover, they can stalk their unsuspecting prey.
